Field Note — Tanzania

Mbozi District, Songwe Region. Two hundred and thirty-five family-owned farms, each delivering hand-harvested cherry to a centralized processing station built in the last three years. The goal: consistent processing, better quality, better prices — and more money reaching the smallholder farmers who grew it.

What makes this coffee stand out isn’t just where it’s from — it’s how it’s made. While most washed coffees today use mechanical depulpers to strip the fruit instantly, this one is processed the old way. Depulped the same day it’s harvested, then fermented in cement tanks for 24–72 hours to loosen and remove the fruit naturally. Washed clean of mucilage, sorted through water channels, and dried on raised beds — or in mechanical driers when the weather demands it. Sometimes a post-washing soak of 8–12 hours is added before drying, a technique that once made Kenyan coffee famous. Seldom used today. Still exceptional when it is.

This is a peaberry — a single, round bean where two would normally form. Denser, more concentrated, and in the right hands, one of the most rewarding cups on the roster.

Tasting Notes by Roast

  • Medium: Chocolaty and spiced with a lingering hint of acidity. Amaretto, warm spice, mild fruit sweetness. Bulletproof.
  • Dark: Rich chocolate, robust spice, zero acidity. Clean and deep all the way through. Retains its character without going flat.

Freshness Policy

Every bag is roasted within the last 14 days in small batches. Orders ship within 3 days of your purchase.

We will never ship out stale coffee. The Frontier demanded only the best, and so do we.

Ground Coffee Disclaimer

In order to give the best coffee drinking experience, each bag is batch roasted, bagged as whole beans (this allows the coffee flavors and notes to really bloom), and then carefully sealed.

If ground coffee is ordered, we will open the bag(s) no older than two weeks old and grind per order. This is done to prevent back stock of ground coffee from sitting on the shelf and going stale.

Ground coffee stays fresh for about a week or two after grinding, where as whole bean can last for up to 2-3 months. This is why whole bean coffee is always recommended for the best and longest lasting experience.

*All sanitary precautions are taken while grinding orders*
